Container Deposit Scheme

The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) in Moonee Valley is operated by Tomra. Information on the types of containers accepted and donation locations can be found on the CDS West app  or the CDS website .

The Rethinking Waste Collective is involved in two key initiatives on CDS: advocating for more machines to be installed in the municipality to fill the existing hole in coverage; and registering Moonee Valley Sustainability (MVS) as an authorised recipient of the 10c donations. The collective also promotes this donation income to members and the wider community as part of our annual fundraising campaign.

CDS Hole Campaign

The rollout of the CDS in Moonee Valley has been uneven. While reverse vending machines and over-the-counter facilities are available in the northern and southern parts of the area, there are significant gaps in accessibility for many residents in Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale, and Flemington, where high-density development is more prevalent.

Additionally, there are no provisions in Avondale Heights and Niddrie. Recognizing the potential benefits of better coverage, MVS is advocating to the Council to explore its properties as potential sites for reverse vending machines to help fill these gaps, and to encourage other agencies or businesses to participate as well.  If you know of a good location, or have a location to offer, then get in touch.

CDS Fundraising

As a registered charity, Moonee Valley Sustainability Inc. has taken the step to register as a recipient of your 10-cent refunds. In its first 12 months, the program raised over $500, which is a significant amount for a small community group like MVS.

Unlike grant funding, the money is not tied to any specific project, making it a crucial part of diversifying our income and ensuring greater sustainability. These funds are used to support our rethinking waste projects, events, and initiatives.

To donate your 10c to MVS, simply download the app and select MVS as your preferred charity. When you drop off your containers, scan the barcode on the app and insert your containers. The funds will automatically transfer to MVS’s bank account. Alternatively, you can donate by scanning this barcode at the CDS machine:
